Update: The body of a missing Stony Brook man is found in nearby woods

Update (Aug. 8): After an extensive search, John Wile of Stony Brook, who’s been missing since Sunday morning, was found dead in woods north of Research and Development Park off of Stony Brook Road.

His body was found Tuesday afternoon, police said. There appears to be no-criminality.

Members from the following assisted with the search:

Suffolk County Police Sixth Precinct, Aviation Section, Canine Section, Stony Brook University Police, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police, Stony Brook Fire Department, Nesconset Fire Department, Nissequogue Fire Department, Setauket Fire Department, St. James Fire Department, Port Jefferson Fire Department and numerous volunteers from the surrounding communities.

Original notice (Aug. 6): A man last seen running in Stony Brook Village is now being reported as missing.

John Wile, who suffers from dementia, left his Stony Brook home at 34 Erland Road around 7:45 a.m. for a jog along Main Street.

He hasn’t been seen since.

Wile, 74, is described as white, 5-feet-10, 150 pounds with gray balding hair and a scar on his head. He was either wearing a yellow or blue shirt, with dark-colored shorts and running sneakers.
