Smithtown East gymnast captures gold at state championships

Smithtown High School East junior Bayla Goldberg received a sort-of belated but perfect birthday gift this year —becoming a state champion.

Goldberg, who gets to celebrate her Feb. 29 birthday — on her birthday — only once every four years on Leap Day, captured the gold medal in the uneven bars at the New York State High School Gymnastics Championships on March 1 in Buffalo.

Goldberg posted a top score of 9.775 to secure the state title.

The victory capped off a memorable birthday week for the 11th grader, solidifying her among New York’s best high school gymnasts.
