Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West took their volleyball rivalry outdoors on Monday, playing what’s believed to be Long Island’s first official outdoor high school volleyball match.
The event, held on a specially built court outside at High School East, was months in the making.
“Our East girls coach, George Alamia, came to me with this proposal,” said Smithtown Central School District Director of Athletics Jason Lambert. “It took a lot of meetings, community support, and it finally came to fruition. It exceeded expectations — I didn’t know it would look this good!”
Smithtown East swept both the boys and girls matches, 3-0.

Smithtown West senior Logan Singleton said he was blown away by the setup. “I had no idea this was possible,” he said. “It looks super cool.”
Brianna Cerullo, a senior Smithtown East, echoed the sentiment.
“It’s amazing our program was able to do this for us,” she said.
