Sol y Luna Artisan Boutique marks its first year in Babylon Village

|

Sol y Luna Artisan Boutique just celebrated its one-year anniversary in Babylon Village.

Mexican-American Gina Gonzalez opened the shop, which primarily sells handcrafted handbags from Mexico, last June at 61 Deer Park Avenue.

The Deer Park resident, who has over 20 years of retail management experience, started the venture on the hunch she would be filling a fashion need.

“I wanted to bring the items people go and buy in Mexico to [Long Island],” she said.

Gonzalez went back and forth to Oaxaca, Mexico, to learn more about the products being offered. Among her favorite were handbags.

Each one is unique.

“I have some with fibers of the agave plant,” she said. “Some are made with recycled plastic, and some with straw.”

The prices vary per bag, from $49.99 to $109.

“I’m bringing something new … fresh, affordable prices,” said Gonzalez.

In addition to the bags, Sol y Luna sells handmade huaraches — leather Mexican sandals — as well as hats and coverups.

To celebrate Sol y Luna’s time in the village, the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Saturday.

“Everyone in Babylon is nice and very welcoming,” said Gonzalez. “And they are loving the product.”
