Some things to know about the Suffolk Marathon

About 1,000 full-marathon runners will be making their way through Bayport and Blue Point and into Patchogue on Sunday before turning around and heading back to Oakdale.

And the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce has been doing what it can to roll out the red carpet for the runners. The business leaders are hoping between 2,0000 and 3,000 people show up in Patchogue Village to cheer them on.

“Certainly anything we do in Patchogue these days attracts a crowd, so I’m hoping this won’t be any different,” said David Kennedy, the Chamber’s executive director. “But I realize this is the first time ever this is even happening, and I think word of the event is just starting.”

Here are some things to know about the marathon before heading into Patchogue on Friday.

• The Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier.

• Montauk Highway will be closed to vehicle traffic from Oakdale into Main Street in Patchogue Sunday until 2 p.m. The closures will start to go into effect as early as 7 a.m. Click here for the marathon route. For those who need to cross Montauk, police will be directing cars to designated north-south roads for crossing when it’s clear.

• About 3,000 runner are participating, with about 2,000 running a half-marathon and the rest taking on the full, 26.2- mile challenge.

• The Chamber has hired a Andrew Sisters-style band to perform at Capital One Plaza on East Main Street throughout the morning into the early afternoon. There will be noise-makers and other activities for kids and adults.

• The county-organized event, which is the first of its kind for Suffolk County, is being billed as a fundraiser that will help the county aid local veterans. Veterans groups will be handing out flags and parts of Main Street will be festooned in red, white and blue.

• The village’s Sunday farmers market will continue on West Main Street as planned.

Village Idiot Pub and Fulton’s Gate will be offering breakfast specials, with other restaurants hosting outdoor seating and some of the shops holding sidewalk sales.

Patchogue Arts Council, ArtsSpace Lofts and Plaza Cinema will have arts-oriented festivities, since the runners will be running across those locations on Terry Street before making a left onto Rider and heading back north toward Main Street again. They’ll be initially turning down South Ocean Avenue when reaching Patchogue.

St. Joseph’s College is serving as a staging and signup area for participants on Friday and Saturday, with Blue Point Brewery offering shuttle services from St. Joseph’s into Patchogue for runners and their families.
