A Sonic Drive-in fast food restaurant in Shirley is moving ahead after the Town of Brookhaven’s Zoning Board of Appeals approved a number of requested variances Tuesday night.
The 2,700-square-foot restaurant proposed for the northwest corner of the Majestic Corners shopping center, which is anchored by Best Market, would feature 36 indoor seats and 20 car stalls, allowing orders to be brought to customer’ doors.
A Sonic representative agreed to reduce the height of two wall signs to 20 feet from 22 feet, add evergreen hedging along Montauk Highway and ensure that affect lighting will be kept within 1,800 lumens.

At the meeting, the plaza’s lawyer said she reached out local civics and did not receive a response.
Councilman Michael Loguercio, whose district includes the property, said the ZBA’s approval essentially means the restaurant will move forward.
“They’ll have to go before the Planning Board to go through the normal buffers and such, but it’s a go.”
“I think it’s a great project,” Loguercio added. “Some people in the community were asking for a Hispanic restaurant, but Sonic is one of the restaurants that people were asking for. I think it’s good that were able to bring them here.”
