Patchogues’s South Ocean Middle School made sure students were picture ready this month with free haircuts provided by Principal Christopher Cherouvis and barbers from Three Jays Barber Shop in Patchogue.
Cherouvis and the local barbers volunteered their time the weekend before picture day, giving students fresh cuts inside the school gymnasium.
The initiative, held after the Patchogue-Medford homecoming parade on Saturday, Oct. 4, was designed to promote pride, confidence and a sense of belonging within the school community, school district officials said.
“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve this community and give back in ways that directly benefit our students,” Cherouvis said.
“One of my goals is to ensure that each of our students feels confident, supported, and prepared for every aspect of school life, both academically and personally,” he added.
Patchogue-Medford School District Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations Frank Mazzie also joined the event, helping generate enthusiasm among students. The students’ new looks were showcased for the school’s picture days on Monday and Tuesday.
Interim district Superintendent Lori Cannetti praised the effort, calling it a “meaningful experience.”
