Five injured in three-car crash in Southampton, driver charged with DWI

|

Five people were hurt in a multi-car crash on County Road 104 in Southampton Saturday night, leading to the late-night arrest of a Riverhead man on drunk driving charges.

Erik Yatvelasquez, 22, was operating one of three vehicles involved in the 7:44 p.m. wreck and will be arraigned on a DWI charge, police said.

Southampton Town Police said the collision happened roughly a half-mile south of CR-105.

Because of the severity of injuries, Suffolk County Police’s Medivac helicopter airlifted one victim to Stony Brook University Hospital, authorities said. Four others hurt in the collision were taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies converged on the crash site, including ambulances from Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance, Westhampton Beach Ambulance and East Quogue Fire Rescue. The Flanders Fire Department assisted with scene safety and treatment of the victims.

The Southampton Town Police Department’s Community Response Unit (CRU) worked alongside New York State Police troopers at the scene.

The crash led to a lengthy road closure, with both lanes of CR-104 shut down between the traffic circle at CR-31 and the intersection of CR-104 and CR-105. The roadway was reopened shortly after midnight Sunday.

The investigation into the collision remains ongoing. Southampton police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the department’s Detective Division at 631.702.2230.
