The Island Symphony Orchestra is set to captivate audiences once again, but this time, with a unique twist — the inclusion of talented canine performers.
On Saturday, July 13, at Bay Shore’s Under the Big Tent Festival, the orchestra will present Leopold Mozart’s delightful “Hunting Symphony,” featuring an ensemble of musicians accompanied by a few particularly talented dogs.
This innovative performance concept requires dogs that can bark on cue, adding an element of surprise to the humorous classical work. Imagine the harmonious blend of musical notes with the playful barks of our four-legged friends, creating a symphony unlike any other.
But how does one’s beloved pet become a part of this extraordinary musical experience? Keep reading.
Step 1: The Application
Dog owners who believe their furry companions are ready for their orchestral debut are invited to submit a video demonstrating their dog’s ability to start and stop barking upon signal — all without the use of voice commands. The deadline for applications is May 10, 2024.

A panel of judges will meticulously review all submissions and select 6-8 finalists whose dogs exhibit exceptional talent and discipline. The announcement of these finalists will be made on May 15, 2024.
Step 2: The Finals
The chosen finalists will have the exclusive opportunity to participate in in-person auditions, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at the Second Avenue Firehouse in Bay Shore. Winners of this competition will be announced on June 9.
Step 3: The Performance
The canines with the best pipes will join the Island Symphony Orchestra on July 13, where they will enchant audiences with their musical contributions. Owners may be called upon to assist the conductor by cueing their dogs to bark at designated moments, ensuring a seamless and captivating performance. As an added bonus, owners of winning dogs will receive a portrait of their beloved pet, painted by the talented artist Hillary Broder.
Requirements:
To participate in this musical extravaganza, dog owners must be residents of Nassau or Suffolk County, embodying the spirit of community and collaboration that defines Bay Shore’s vibrant culture.
