Long Beach was just awarded a whopping $1.45 million from New York State to enhance amenities along its 2.25-mile stretch of Atlantic Ocean boardwalk, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Tuesday.
The money will help fund two concession buildings and three boardwalk extensions.
“These improvements will provide additional commercial space, new bathrooms, and more room for pop-up markets, events, and shaded seating,” the announcement reads.
The money is coming through the state’s Pro-Housing Communities Initiative, which delivers up to $650 million in discretionary funding each year to 273 municipalities that the state has certified as pro-housing communities.

Council President Brendan Finn and the rest of the City Council immediately took to social media Tuesday to announce the award to locals.
“This is wonderful news for our residents,” the post read, followed by this statement from Finn:
“Our boardwalk is the heart of our city and this grant award will allow us to make targeted improvements to our community’s crown jewel to enhance the boardwalk experience for our residents and visitors and boost the City’s economy,” he said.
“Thank you, Governor Hochul. This award brings this administration’s grant total to over $8 million, a testament to our team’s efforts to keep taxes down while continuing to invest in our future and working with our partners at all levels of government. The administration has made economic development a top priority with an imaginative and aggressive pursuit of grants to help improve our City.”
