Medford man charged with DWI after slamming into construction vehicle on Sunrise Highway

Suffolk Police arrested a Medford man for driving drunk after he crashed into a construction vehicle Thursday night in a closed work zone on Sunrise Highway in Brookhaven late Thursday night, cops said.

John Arthur Seeger, 48, was driving a 2026 Hyundai Tucson west on Sunrise Highway between Exits 57 and 58 when his vehicle entered the closed construction zone in the right lane and struck the driver’s side of an unoccupied construction vehicle, according to authorities.

Six construction workers were on site at the time of the 11:37 p.m. crash but were not injured, police said. Seeger also was not injured.

The collision ruptured the construction vehicle’s fuel tank, spilling fuel across the roadway and causing the highway to be shut down for four hours.

Multiple Suffolk Police units responded to investigate and the state Department of Environmental Conservation was called to the scene to assess the fuel leak.

Police charged Seeger with driving while intoxicated and issued him a ticket for violating New York’s Move Over Law. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday at Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip.
