A hit-and-run driver plowed into a 13-year-old boy on his e-bike Tuesday night in Lake Ronkonkoma, leaving the teen seriously injured and adding to the wave of dangerous e-bike crashes in Suffolk County, according to authorities.
Suffolk police said Travis Wertovitch of Ronkonkoma was heading north on Hawkins Avenue about 8:30 p.m. when a southbound 2012 white Ford Fusion turned left onto School Street and struck him. The driver didn’t stop and kept going east on School Street, police said.
Wertovitch was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives from the the police department’s Fourth Squad are investigating and urge anyone with information to call 631.854.8452 or Crime Stoppers at 800.220.TIPS.
August 3: Frerlin Sarceno Gudiel of Huntington Station ran a red light on Depot Road while riding his e-bike and slammed into an SUV, seriously injuring himself and the 81-year-old driver. He was later charged with DWI and operating an e-bike while intoxicated.
June 7: Tiager Collier, 23, was struck by a driver while riding his e-bike at Fulton Street and Troy Avenue in West Babylon. Manuel Serrano Sanchez, 45, allegedly fled the scene, leaving Collier seriously hurt, authorities said. He was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious Injury.
May 13: Ezra Ama, 14, of Kings Park, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries after being struck by an SUV at 3:47 p.m. on Pulaski Road. Ezra was operating a Ridstar-brand E-bike, police said. The SUV driver was not injured.
May 7: Joseph Bourque, 57, of East Patchogue was seriously injured when his Letric Ebike Xpress 750 slammed into a 2009 Acura on Circle Drive East, near Barton Avenue, in East Patchogue.
May 2: 20-year-old Aryan Saini of Central Islip was killed in a hit-and-run crash on May 2 while riding an e-bike on Hauppauge Road in Commack. The driver fled the scene. Saini died at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
