Three Village and Half Hollow Hills school districts each have two schools among the best 10 elementary schools in Suffolk County, according to rankings from U.S. News & World Report.
Using data from the U.S. Department of Education, the outlet evaluated nearly 4,000 New York schools (and more than 103,000 nationwide). The highest ranking Suffolk elementary on U.S. News’ New York list was Bayport-Blue Point’s Sylvan Avenue Elementary School at No. 28. Three other Suffolk elementary schools landed in the state’s top 100.
The methodology for the rankings focused on state assessments of students who were proficient or better in mathematics and reading/language arts. The study also accounted for student backgrounds, achievement in core subjects, and how well individual schools educate their students.
Listed below are the 10 elementary schools that placed highest in U.S. News’ ranking of 1,769 schools in New York. Some 2,000 New York schools were not assigned a ranking. Each school’s overall score out of 100 is listed in parenthesis.
#1. Sylvan Elementary School in Bayport (98.36)
Syvlan Elementary achieved its impressive overall score with the help of its low, 8:1 student-teacher ratio. The school saw 85% of its students score at or above the proficient level for math and 95% at or above that level for reading.
#2. Quogue Elementary School (97.91)
Also boasting a super 8:1 student-teacher ratio, Quogue Elementary’s reading proficiency rates were 87 percent in and 92 percent in reading. The school ranked 32nd in the state in the U.S. News study.

#3. Nassakeag Elementary School in East Setauket (95.87)
Nassakeag Elementary performed best among Three Village School District’s five elementary schools, with 87% of its students scoring at or above the proficient levels for both math and reading.

#4. Lloyd Harbor School in Huntington (94.97)
Part of Cold Spring Harbor Central School District, Lloyd Harbor cracked the top 100 New York schools at No. 90. The school serves grades 2-6. The school has a comparatively impressive 88% reading proficiency rate, according to the report.

#5. Park View Elementary School in King Park (92.7)
A school in Kings Park Central School District, Park View saw 85% of its students score at or above the proficient levels for math, as well as for reading.
#6. Minnesauke Elementary School (90.84)
The second Three Village school on this list, Minnesauke Elementary saw 82% of its students score at or above the proficient level for math, as well as for reading. The student-teacher ratio is 13:1.
#7. Bretton Woods in Hauppauge (90.27)
Bretton Woods has a favorable 10:1 student-teacher ratio, according to U.S. News. The report also indicted that 93 percent of the school’s 53 full-time teachers have three or more years of experience.
#8. Vanderbilt Elementary School in Dix Hills (89.65)
At Vanderbilt Elementary, 97.9% of the teachers have three or more years experience. The Half Hollow Hills Central School District school had an 80% reading proficiency and a 79% proficiency in math among its students, U.S. News reported in its ranking.
#9. Paumanok Elementary School in Dix Hills (88.46)
At Paumanok Elementary School, 82% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 77% scored at or above that level for reading, according U.S. News’ report.
#10. Harding Avenue Elementary School in Lindenhurst (87.84)
Harding Elementary has a favorable 10:1 student-teacher ratio. At the Lindenhurst school, 100 of the teachers have three or more years of experience, according to the rankings report.
