The $30 million Ronald McDonald House that’s now under construction at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is inching closer to the finish line.
The nonprofit, with nearly 380 locations in 64 countries, provides lodging and support for families with critically hospitalized children who need to travel for care.
The effort got a big boost Sunday at Stony Brook University as hundreds of community members laced up their running shoes to raise money to help make that happen.
“Anthony’s Red Shoe Fund Run” was hosted by Ronald McDonald House Charities New York Metro.
Runners had a choice of a one-mile or 5K.
Dr. Lisa Muratori, a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the Stony Brook School of Health Professions, and also a volunteer for Ronald McDonald House, helped organize the campus fundraising event.
“It’s going to be an amazing place, so that we have a space for families to stay to get food to have support,” she told News 12 Long Island Sunday.
The Stony Brook location, which would be Suffolk’s first, is expected to open in 2026.
Construction started in April.

The planned facility will measure 60,000 square feet and include 30 private bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms for families.
Families will receive no-cost housing, respite, meals and hospitality just across the street from their child’s bedside, at the hospital.
There’s also a planned media center, fitness center, meditation room, outdoor playground, interactive playrooms, community kitchens and more. Families also have access to full stocked pantries, with staffers and volunteers providing meals.
“This facility will stand as a beacon of hope, compassion and support for families facing their toughest challenges,” Dr. William Wertheim, the executive vice president for Stony Brook Medicine, told The Statesman, Stony Brook’s student newspaper.
“Our partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities highlights the strength of collaboration, and I am delighted to be joining our resources and expertise to meet the diverse needs of our community.’”
The nearest, already open Ronald McDonald House is in New Hyde Park at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
