Babylon board has concerns over planned Insomnia Cookies spot

|

Babylon Village is reviewing a proposal for Insomnia Cookies, a late-night national cookie chain that, if approved, would open its first Suffolk County location.

Insomnia, famous for delivering warm cookies until 3 a.m. on weekends, is eyeing 55 Deer Park Ave.

The proposal was discussed at a public hearing Tuesday at Village Hall, where trustees raised questions about noise, parking and late-night hours.

“The concern is they get a cookie, they get their ice cream, it’s a nice night. They’re hanging around,” late at night, said Babylon Mayor Mary Adams.

She expressed concern the late-night chatter would disturb residents in the above apartments and in the immediate area.

Insomnia Cookies representative and local realtor Jamie Winkler told the board the hours are part of the company’s business model, which has worked in more than 350 locations nationwide.

The store’s menu includes cookies ranging from $3.25 to $5.25, along with ice cream and brownies.

Board members also questioned whether the shop would succeed in a suburban downtown without a nearby college. The only current Long Island location, in Hempstead, is close to colleges and universities.

That, and board members wondered whether there would be enough on-street parking for cookie cravers nearby.

Winkler said parking wouldn’t be an issue, noting that both customers and delivery drivers could use the rear lot to avoid congestion on Deer Park Avenue.

Adams said a decision could come soon.

How it started

The chain began in 2003, when University of Pennsylvania student Seth Berkowitz grew tired of the limited late-night snack options on campus. His solution — warm cookies delivered to your door — turned into a national brand with locations in more than 350 cities.
