Driver killed in fiery crash at Sunken Meadow State Parkway toll plaza

A driver died shortly before noon on Monday when his vehicle crashed into the toll booth area at the entrance to Sunken Meadow State Park and burst into flames, New York State Police said.

Troopers from the Brentwood barracks responded to the one-car crash at the northern end of Sunken Meadow State Parkway about 11:14 a.m., police said. The drive was only occupant.

The crash and fire caused extensive damage to the car and toll booth. Investigators are still working to identify the victim and determine the vehicle’s make and model, police said.

Members of the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, along with the New York State Park Police, the Smithtown Fire Department and Suffolk Police.

The investigation is ongoing.
