Dashcam video footage presents a new look at a Sunrise Highway crash in Bayport that left a Shirley man hospitalized and another motorist injured.
The clip, shared by driver Christopher Delgrosso and provided to News 12 Long Island, shows a 2022 BMW sliding across the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway near the Nicolls Road exit.
In the video, the car moves from right to left across the frame, crosses into the median, and slams into a guardrail, triggering a large plume of smoke on impact.
Sounding shocked, a voice from inside the car that captured the recording of the crash exclaims “Oh my God” three times.
Suffolk Police said the Mario Auer, 25, of Shirley, was driving east on Sunrise Highway about 1:14 p.m. Tuesday when he lost control of the vehicle a few hundred feet west of Nicolls Road.
The car overturned when it struck the center median, police said.
Auer and his passenger, Caitlyn Rose Lovelock, 28, of Mastic Beach, were both ejected from the vehicle, police said.
Treated at local hospitals
Auer was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while Lovelock was treated at NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk in Patchogue for minor injuries.
The crash shut down portions of the eastbound lanes and caused traffic delays as far west as Bohemia for hours. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
