The Babylon Village Volunteer Corps wants to help you with chores

A volunteer corps is back running in Babylon Village, and it is stronger than ever.

After years of inactivity, the Babylon Village Youth Corps was revisited this past January by village officials.

“[The Youth Corps] kind of fell by the wayside,” said Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino.

After several meetings discussing how to re-start the group, the village decided to a move into a more inclusive direction, renaming the organization Babylon Village Volunteer Corps to add adults.

“Any time you can teach the youth how to give back it’s important,” said Scordino. “And to expand it to everyone, that helps too.”

Since then, the support for the new volunteer corps has been pouring in, says village Trustee Mary Adams.

“We have a really great core of volunteers,” she said. “Now we want to tap into those people who need help.”

Adams went on to explain the volunteer corps offers a wide variety of free services for “anyone who is in need of assistance.” And each month the group will be focusing on different areas.

For example, April is yard cleanup month.

“It’s for residents who need help with a spring cleanup — like leaves, twigs, and all those types of things,” said Adams.

And if the job is too big for the Volunteer Corps, they’ll help find someone who can help.

“There was a woman who came home from Florida and because of flooding found part of dock on her property,” Adams said. “We couldn’t move it, but we called our sanitation department and it was removed 48 hours later.”

To request help, email bvvcorps@gmail.com or call 516-819-9596.

“We hope all residents participate in it and realize what a great asset it is to the community,” said Adams.
