The Blue Angels and Thunderbirds will take flight across LI/NYC April 28

|

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and U.S Air Force Thunderbirds will salute COVID-19 frontline workers with a flyover in New York on April 28.

The Blue Angels Facebook page made the announcement on Saturday.

“We are truly excited to take to the skies with our Navy counterparts for a nation-wide tribute to the men and women keeping our communities safe,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John Caldwell, Thunderbird 1 and mission commander for the flyover. “We hope to give Americans a touching display of American resolve that honors those serving on the frontline of our fight with COVID-19.”

On that date, three demonstrations will take place in the areas around New York City, Newark, Trenton and Philadelphia.

Here is the flight schedule:

  • Flyovers in Newark, New York City and surrounding boroughs will start at noon, lasting approximately 35 minutes.
  • Flyovers in Trenton will start at 1:45 p.m. and will last approximately 10 minutes.
  • Flyovers in Philadelphia will start at 2 p.m. and will last approximately 20 minutes.

According to the release, a detailed flight route will be released the day prior to the demonstration.

The flight squadrons did a similar flyover in Colorado on April 18. See the video below.

This will be one of the only time local spectators can watch these flight crews perform this year as the 2020 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach — typically planned for Memorial Day weekend — was canceled due to the pandemic.
