The Hunchback of Notre Dame debuts at Babylon’s Argyle Theatre

The Argyle Theatre at Babylon Village is getting set to launch its newest production on Main Street: “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

The play, which debuts Thursday, Nov. 8, is based on the Victor Hugo classic novel, and the 1990s Disney film.

The Babylon Village theatre has been transformed into 15th Century Paris.

The story follows the life of a hunchbacked bell ringer, Quasimodo, who is put in a position to save the lives of people who hurt him.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame is going to be an incredible production. Massive and intricate set, sweeping Disney score, iconic characters and live theater at its finest,” said Dylan Perlman, an Argyle Theatre co-owner.

The cast will consisted of 17 actors,  a rotating choir of 50-plus Long Islanders, and an orchestra. Perlman says the story and message is timeless.

“Truly a story of love, acceptance, and what it means to be a hero,” he s aid.

This passionate production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a sweeping musical with a timeless theme which poses the question: What makes a monster, and what makes a man?

Based on Victor Hugo’s classic 1831 novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. and the 1996 Disney film, the play takes place in 15th-century Paris and tells the story of Quasimodo, the hunchback bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral. Held captive by his caretaker, the devious archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo.

Quasimodo longs to be outside with the merry crowds celebrating the Feast of Fools. He escapes and is harassed by a boisterous crowd until Esmeralda, a beautiful gypsy, intervenes, protects him from harm, and captures his heart.

Complications arise when the archdeacon and Phoebus de Martin, the new captain of the guard, also fall in love with Esmeralda. Dangerous Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies who are ready to kill any outsiders who discover their secret hideout. It’s up to Quasimodo to save them all!
