The new Long Island Nets are holding a mascot-designing contest

|

The Long Island Nets are looking for a mascot that could reflect not only the organization and its values, but those of the surrounding area as well.

The NBA G League affiliate to the Brooklyn Nets is accepting mascot designs from now until May 1.

Thus far, zeroing in on the perfect design concept has been a challenge.

“It is not easy to represent Long Island,” said Long Island Nets’ vice president of business operations, Alton Byrd. “People think it’s an island, that it should be something that speaks to the water, but it’s not that easy.”

So the Nets organization is calling on its fellow Long Islanders to help.

“We are looking for different, for something fun, something that can represent Long Island in the best possible light,” said Byrd, who lives in Mineola.

The designs must-haves, according to Byrd, are the Long Island Nets logo (seen below), the team’s colors (red, white, and blue), and should represent the characteristics of “loyal, aspirational, and legacy.”

The design winner will receive a trip for two to the 2019 NBA G League Showcase (location to be determined), with tickets, airfare, and hotel included.
