The new Mesita location in Amityville announces opening date

|

Mesita Mexican’s big reveal in Amityville is almost upon us.

Mesita, which took over a nearly 120-year-old bank building in the downtown and transformed, opens to the public at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, ownership told Greater Long Island.

And as we reported earlier this month, your jaw will absolutely drop upon entry.

“You will not feel like you’re in New York,” promised Jonathan Lopez (pictured), Mesita’s general manager. “And I just cannot wait to see those people walk in and those smiles and that look of awe and, just, ‘Wow!’”

To reimagine the old bank space and its soaring ceilings, the Mesita team recruited lifelong artist Craig Banks of Seaford.

Banks had built hundreds of Broadway theatre sets across decades. His vision was to bring the outdoors in, to make the massive space look and feel like a Mexican zócalo, or plaza. Banks calls it “the village.”

“It’s going to feel like you’re on vacation; that’s the idea,” Lopez told us. “We want you to feel like you’re in Mexico, just chilling. Enjoy the decor. Forget about your problems. Take in the sounds and the smell, it’s all going to come together in here.”

“And wait until you see all the food,” he said.

“The sizzling fajitas, when you smell that walking in here, you’ll just say, ‘I’ll have that!’”

The space also boasts a private party and more intimate dining area on the second floor, beyond the wrought iron balconies. Click here for prior coverage. Photos by Nick Esposito.
