The Post Office Café to host annual Great Case Race this Saturday

Since 2006, the Post Office Café has called on Long Islanders to assemble their best drinking squads for the annual Great Case Race.

The charity event, founded by the Post Office’s Chris Brodmerkel, challenges teams to chug a case of beer faster than their opponents. In addition to earning a trophy and bragging rights, the winning team gets to donate the day’s proceeds to a charity of their choice.

This year’s Great Case Race will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, with a 12:30 p.m. registration. The drinking begins at 1 p.m.

“I wanted to get people together to have a good time while throwing a different type of charity event,” said Brodmerkel.

According to the restaurant, the yearly fundraiser that draws larges crowds averages $3,500 a year for charities.

“You would think there be a young crowd, but it is actually very mixed,” said Brodmerkel. “Teams that won in the past range from college kids to people in their 50s and 60s.”

And it’s not all about the chugging, adds Brodmerkel.

“Most teams that come don’t actually race,” he said. “They get their beers and they hang out for the day while their money goes to charity.”

While enjoying the brews, people can participate in the raffle, which is part of the fundraising efforts.

The Post Office Café will be giving away bicycle, corn hole board from Bud Light, a Heineken igloo cooler, and 20×30 framed photo from Josh Goetz Photography.

“The best part about the race is the entire community comes together to donate,” said Brodmerkel. “We  have 30 restaurants from the local area that have donated gift cards.”

Registration for teams costs $140. Each team must have no more than three males and at least one female. Each registration includes beer, food, and t-shirts for the team.
