The widely-popular Mayor’s Cup Regatta and Clambake returns to Babylon Village after hiatus

|

One of the biggest races on the South Shore is returning to Babylon Village this weekend.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Long Island Yacht Club (LIYC) will be hosting the 2019 Mayor’s Cup Regatta and Clambake— it’s first since 2010.

The event was founded by the LIYC in the 1980s, and quickly became one of the largest attended races in the region.

Founded by the Long Island Yacht Club back in the 1980s, the Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta quickly became the Island’s largest attended race each season. After years of success, however, the racing committee decided to cancel the regatta.

Now under new ownership, the yacht club is “aiming to return this prestigious race to its former glory and its rightful place among the top races on Long Island,” said the club’s spokesperson.

In addition to the LIYC, the event will be co-hosted by the Great South Bay Racing Association, the South Bay Cruising Club, and sponsored by York Analytical Laboratories. Proceeds from the outing will go on to benefit Save The Great South Bay, a nonprofit that aims to revitalize the Great South Bay.

the day’s details

The day will kick off with a paddleboard social clean up at Fox Island from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

The racing takes place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with multi-class performance handicap racing fleet (PHRF) and dinghy regattas.

After that, the day finishes off with clambake (3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) with live music, cold beer, and fresh oysters.

In addition, there will fun and educational activities such as learning about the 60′ Priscilla, an 1888 working sloop.
