A team of volunteers from across the Patchogue and Medford areas and beyond were hard at work this spring collecting toilet paper. Rolls of Scots-brand toilet paper to be exact.
The symmetrical rolls are great for stacking, we’re told.
And stack they did Thursday in Army Plaza during the year’s first Alive After Five, where a TP Pyramid rose above the crowd during the 4 and 1/2 hour festival.
“15,000 rolls were used,” said the event’s brainchild, the Rev. Dwight Wolter of Patchogue Congregational Church. “We ran out of time to place them all on the pyramid. They were immediately donated to designated shelters for homeless veterans and domestic violence survivors.”
He said the next move is “to get the laws changed that classify toilet paper as a ‘luxury item’ that cannot be included in grant requests.”

“The Toilet Paper Pyramid has been happening on a smaller scale for five years inside the Congregational Church of Patchogue,” Wolter said. “This year we took it to the streets in cooperation with Dave Rogers of the VFW, synagogues, mosques, churches, chambers of commerce, legislators, libraries, businesses and 1,500 individuals who contributed sweat, money, and toilet paper.”
