Traffic Alerts: DOT announces overnight detour at Higbie Lane overpass in West Islip

Motorists should expect an overnight bridge closure of the Higbie Lane bridge over State Route 27/Sunrise Highway on between Friday, September 29 at 10 p.m. and Saturday, September 30 at 6 a.m. for bridge rehabilitation work.

All lanes on the bridge will be closed to traffic to allow crews to perform necessary work in preparation for the next phase of this project.

Portable variable message signs have been placed in the area in advance of this closure.

Northbound Higbie Lane traffic will be detoured along the South Service Road eastbound to Udall Road and then the North Service Road to return to Higbie Lane via Kane Street.

Southbound Higbie Lane traffic will be detoured down the North Service Road to State Route 231/Babylon-Northport Expressway and then the South Service Road to return toHigbie Lane via Henry Street.

Detour signs have been placed along the route for motorists to follow.

This is part of a $5.3 million New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) project to perform reinforcement repairs and enhancements on three bridges all within Suffolk County.

Motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, obey any speed restrictions that may be in place, and the instructions of the flag persons for their safety and the safety of the highway work crew.  As with most road and bridge projects, work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.
