Trump to attend Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black; wants Bradley to play for U.S.

|

President Trump is heading to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black next month — and he’s expecting Keegan Bradley to tee off for the U.S. team.

The president announced Saturday night that he’ll attend the tournament’s first day of play on Friday, Sept. 26, at the famed public course in Farmingdale. Thursday, Sept. 25, will feature practice rounds and an opening ceremony ahead of the competition.

“Keegan Bradley should DEFINITELY be on the American Ryder Cup Team – As Captain!!! He is an AMAZING guy. It will be a great Ryder Cup,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “At the invite of the PGA Tour, I will be there on Tournament Friday!!! President DJT.”

Captains typically don’t play

Bradley, 39, is already set to lead the U.S. squad as captain, but a recent rule change could allow him to also compete as a player. If he does, he would be the first American since Arnold Palmer in 1963 to serve as a playing captain.

So far, the U.S. Ryder Cup team has six automatic qualifiers: Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley, Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau. Bradley will pick the remaining six.

The Ryder Cup, golf’s signature U.S.-against-Europe team event, runs Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black. The course is one of the nation’s most storied public layouts.

Previously, it has hosted the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, but this will be its first Ryder Cup.

The only other New York course to host the event —held every two years — was the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester.

Bradley has some local ties, having played college golf at St. John’s University. Earlier this month, he surprised fans by handing out more than 3,000 free Ryder Cup tickets on the nearby Red Course as part of a PGA initiative.
