Update: Benjamin Beach opens to bathing in time for weekend

|
Update (Aug. 24):

County health officials announced at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, that Bay Shore’s Benjamin Beach has reopened to bathing.

Original post (Aug. 22):

Excessive bacteria levels have plagued Bay Shore’s Benjamin Beach in recent weeks, forcing the county to close bathing for a third time in August.

The bay beach in Bay Shore Marina will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels, the Suffolk County health department announced Tuesday, Aug. 22.

According to health commissioner Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.

Benjamin Beach was also temporary closed on Aug. 9 and Aug. 18.

For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach Hotline at 631-852-5822 or contact the department’s Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760 during normal business hours.
