Marine police saved a stranded kayaker floating in the Long Island Sound about one mile away from the beach, and the dramatic rescue was captured on video by a police drone camera.
The 34-year-old man had been kayaking about 4 p.m. on Sunday just east of Reeves Beach in Riverhead, before his kayak overturned and the man was separated from the vessel. He had been floating in his life jacket for an hour and a half, before members of the Riverhead Police Marine Unit and the Riverhead Fire Department came to his rescue and brought him ashore.
He was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he received treatment for hypothermia.
Below is dramatic drone video taken of the moment the kayaker was rescued and pulled aboard the marine police boat.
The kayaker’s friend called police about 5:43 p.m., saying he was unable to locate the man. Riverhead Police officers and a Suffolk County Police Aviation quickly located the man’s overturned — and empty — kayak. The man was floating nearby on his back.
Below are photos from the rescue effort.
