Voting is Nov. 17 on $30M bond for Bayport-Blue Point

News | Meeting at 5 p.m. in Bayport to discuss $30M bond

Taxpayers in the Bayport-Blue Point School District will be heading to the polls Nov. 17 to decide on whether or not to undertake a nearly $30 million, district-wide facilities improvements project.

If the measure is approved, the district would be upgrading its science labs and libraries, middle school technology rooms, and its athletic fields. The bond would fund roofs, heating and ventilation systems, as well as provide revamped locker rooms in the middle school — among many other items.

“The proposed bond is a result of nearly two years of discussion with our facilities review committee, district leadership team and community residents to analyze the current and future needs of our students and our facilities,” said school board president Anthony Sanseviro. “By putting the projects together in a bond we would be able to make necessary building repairs and enhancements that would enrich every BBP student’s, both current and future, educational experience.”

The district anticipates the work will cost $29.9 million, with a bulk of that, about 68.2 percent, expected to be reimbursed through New York State building aid.

“The project would cost approximately $12.70 annually per one thousand dollars of a resident’s total tax bill,” according to a statement the district issued today, Monday.

The school board was unanimous in approving the infrastructure upgrades plan.

Voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Bayport-Blue Point High School, officials said.

“Many of these spaces and building systems have simply reached the end of their lifespans and, given the advancements our curriculum has made over the years, other spaces are now inadequate to house our programs,” said Superintendent Vincent Butera.

“This plan will enable us to preserve the integrity of our buildings, enable our schools to operate more efficiently and support the ongoing educational initiatives included in our Thinking Forward strategic plan.”
