It’s not your typical Chinese takeout spot.
Authentic flavors, freshly made sauces and house-made boba tea are already drawing crowds to a new restaurant in downtown Wantagh, just steps from the Wantagh LIRR station and down the block from Mulcahy’s.
Wok Out Asian Cuisine, located at 3266 Railroad Ave., opened last month and is quickly building a loyal following.
“We take pride in the quality of ingredients we use,” Wok Out manager Stephanie Chen told Greater Long Island. “From the meats to the different Chinese vegetables we use, that’s what separates us from other places. You can taste the difference.”
The restaurant’s menu blends traditional dishes and flavors from several regions of China with modern Asian favorites. Its steamed soup dumplings are Shanghai-style, while the shrimp dumplings lean Cantonese. The spicy pork, shrimp and chicken wontons are inspired by Sichuan cuisine.
The menu also branches into other Asian influences, including Korean-style Gangnam fried wings and fish fillets served in Thai green sauce. Its signature stir-fried rice noodles are cooked in sacha sauce, a savory, seafood-based condiment popular in parts of southern China, Taiwan and Fujian cuisine.
“There are a lot of American-style Chinese takeout places around here,” Chen said. “We wanted to be different. Instead of beef and broccoli, here we have braised Wagyu beef in a tangy tomato sauce with mixed vegetables.”
“The word to describe us is authentic — something more like you would find in Flushing, Queens,” she added.
That approach appears to be resonating with local diners.
“We come here at least twice a week now because I love the flavor,” said Wantagh resident April Mei. “It’s so fresh, and it’s not a heavy sauce. It’s not oily, just very tasty.”
