West Islip is getting its first brewery thanks to a local named Ken Srubinski.
Srubinski, who is opening his Secatogue Brewing Company in the former Murtha Construction building at 375 Union Boulevard, said a brewery in West Islip has been a longtime coming.
“It seems like every vacant building becomes a doctor’s office, so I wanted to change it up and bring something exciting to the town,” said the 28-year-old, who still lives in West Islip.
Srubinski’s idea for the brewery stems from two passions.
One, is for crafting beer.
He has been making beer at home with kits for the past five years.
“I started making my own recipes and everyone kept saying it was really good,” he explained.
His other passion is for West Islip.
Srubinski went to West Islip High School, where he met his future wife and the two later had triplets together.
“What better spot to open a brewery than your hometown?” he asked.
He decided to name his brand after the former Native American tribe that used to occupy the area.
“It’s a nod to being local,” Srubinski says.
The new brewery will occupy a 4,300 square-feet location and the hope is to open in about six months, according to Srubinski.
“I am excited to be apart of the community; I love this town,” said Srubinski.
