A group of West Islip High School students spent their spring break on an educational trip to Belize.
The students were chaperoned by Anna Domingo, Kristie Ferruzzi and Ryan Jensen. During the trip, the group visited a local elementary school, where they took part in lessons with the younger students.
The teens also went snorkeling and zip-lining, learned jungle survival skills, practiced their Spanish speaking skills and immersed themselves in the culture.
Global learning trips like West Islip’s foster personal growth and enhanced the students’ understanding of the world, educators say.
“Global learning cultivates understanding of oneself and one’s society and cultural influences, grounding comprehension of the world beyond one’s borders and a sense of responsibility for the challenges humanity faces,” according to the State University of New York’s Global Learning for All initiative. “Global learning imparts skills needed to work across differences to forge mutual understanding and devise solutions to those challenges.”
