WFSD unveils new multi-purpose turf sports field

The William Floyd School District held recently celebrated the official ribbon cutting of a new multi-purpose turf sports field behind Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School in Mastic Beach.

The field has a new track, turf field, goal posts, scoreboard and more for multiple sports teams at all levels to compete on. The field has already played host to games and events.

“Finally, our fields are going to match the talent that plays on them every day,” Robert Vecchio, president of the William Floyd Board of Education, said in a statement. Vecchio cut the ribbon along with fellow trustee Robert Taiani. They were joined by nearly 150 student-athletes, coaches, administrators and members of the board of education.

The new multi-purpose sports field behind Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School is just one facet of the $39.4 million capital project approved by voters in October 2017. The project also includes the newly opened adaptive playground for students and the community, new auditoriums for secondary schools, air conditioning in the three buildings without, infrastructure improvements across the district, a brand new multi-purpose sports turf at the Lincoln Avenue Sports Complex, new tennis courts, softball/baseball field upgrades and more.

The track and field are also open to the community for use each day during non-school hours from dawn until dusk.
