Shoppers at the Bethpage ShopRite on Hempstead Tpke finally got their first look at a major expansion that has been months in the making.
The supermarket opened its new wing Thursday night in the former Ace Hardware space next door, revealing a large new section that for now, is dedicated mostly to dairy, frozen foods and refrigerated products.
“I was there yesterday and love it so far,” Lisa Marie posted on the Greater Massapequa Facebook page. “The new aisles are wide and the lighting is bright and nice.”
“It looks great. Looking forward to the finished product,” added Susanna Chilelli-Tam.
While the new section is now open, work is still underway in other parts of the supermarket.
The deli and seafood departments remains under construction. New walls have been built by the cash registers. Signs posted also indicate that a pickup section is also coming soon to the back of the new space.
ShopRite of Bethpage first opened in February of 2016 after a major renovations, replacing a former Pathmark that closed a year earlier.

The expansion comes as competition among grocery and retail stores along Hempstead Turnpike continues to intensify.
Within a short drive of the Bethpage location are Aldi, Stop & Shop, Target, Walmart Neighborhood Market and Dollar Tree, all of which offer grocery and household items. The 2-mile stretch of Hempstead Tpke is expected to see even more competition in the coming months with the planned arrival of Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace in the space that used to be King Kullen.
The store is owned by the Greenfield family, who also own the ShopRite stores in Commack, Huntington, New Hyde Park and two in Plainview.
ShopRite did not respond to our requests for comment on the project, including the total size of the expansion, the cost of the renovation, or the timeline for completing the remaining work.
