Four Connecticut men nabbed after Yaphank street takeover

911 call led Suffolk Police straight to the illegal event early

Screeching tires. A police chase. Four men in handcuffs. It’s a story we’ve heard again and again in recent months in Suffolk.

Suffolk Police nabbed four Meriden, Connecticut, men and impounded two vehicles early Sunday after breaking up a street takeover in Yaphank.

A 911 caller reported a large gathering of vehicles at 1:10 a.m. on Express Drive North, west of Sills Road. Officers in the Street Takeover Task Force arrived to find vehicles racing and a crowd scattering. The police pulled over a truck towing a trailer carrying a race car and arrested four people inside.

Christian Vargas Hernandez, 28, faces the most serious charges: reckless driving; third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle; and unlawful speed contests, sideshows and races.

John Maldonado, 33, Lawrence Torres, 30, and 35-year-old Efrain Rivera were each charged with unlawful speed contests, sideshows and races.

The four Connecticut men were issued field appearance tickets and are due back in court for arraignment at a later date, cops said. Police impounded the truck, trailer and race car.
