An expected rainy night in Patchogue has forced the cancellation of tonight’s Alive on the River party along the river.
The announcement was made around 11 a.m. today, Thursday, July 18.
“We’ll be looking into possibly rescheduling the last two dates that were rained out,” said John Sarno, an event organizer and co-owner of Drift 82, which is near the mouth of Patchogue River.
The June 20 Alive on the River party was also a rain-out.
The theme for tonight’s event was going to be Mardi Gras. There are three more Alive on the River nights planned for this summer. (See schedule below.)
While the official Alive on the River activities are being postponed, the Patchogue riverfront establishments are still open for business tonight. Those include Harbor Crab Company, The Oar, Off Key Tikki, Drift 82 and Dublin Deck.
The chamber’s Riverfront Committee runs the Alive on the River series, now in its second year.
Each festival offers live music with no cover starting at 5 p.m. at all of the above locations. There are special sponsors and drink specials that change with each theme.
That, and water taxies run up and down the river, making stops at the bars and restaurants and Island View Marina. It’s $10 for unlimited rides from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The waterfront parties run opposite the Alive After Five Thursdays.

The remaining Alive on the River nights (and themes) are as followed:
- Aug. 1: Reggae Sun Splash
- Aug. 15: Howl at the Moon
- Aug. 29: Luau on the River
The initial idea behind the river series was to introduce the bustling riverfront to people from across Long Island who might not know it exists.
“It’s exposing people to another part of the South Shore of Long Island,” said Tim Kelly, also a co-owner at Drift 82. “Everyone knows about Main Street in Patchogue, Bay Shore and Babylon. This is creating a little more awareness of what Patchogue has to offer down by the water. And it’s definitely a draw.”
