Before week-long gigs at the Borgota hotel and casino in Atlantic City in a few months, these two Long Island comics will be taking the stage for the night right here in Patchogue Village.
John Consoli, who will be at Borgota in October, and Mike Keegan, who is booked for January, will be warming up for headliner Bobby Collins at special Comedy Night this Sunday, July 31, at 89 North Music Venue.
They’ll be joined by comedian and event organizer Joe Mylonas, who will be kicking things off.
The doors open at 6 p.m. and the show start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35.
On stage, Consoli — a Wantaugh native and the author of You Don’t Get to Wear That — touches on his remarkable life story about living in the witness protector program as a teenager in Tuscon, Ariz., which is also outlined in his book.
“My dad got bored and joined the Hell’s Angel,” he said. “So me, my mom and sister split.”
His life story took a new chapter recently with a recent divorce and his move to the New Village at Patchogue complex, across the street from 89 North.
“I’ll also talk about going through a divorce and being a single guy at 54,” he added. “It’s very entertaining. Or so I’ve been told.”
Consoli is also a former drill instructor with the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mylonas, a 1996 Bellport High School graduate from East Patchogue, is a military veteran as well, having did two tours in Iraq with the Army in 2003 and then 2005 to 2006.
He’s been doing comedy for three years, last year opening up for Gilbert Gottfried.
Mylonas and the other comedians set to perform Sunday have all become fast friends, he said.
“When you start doing comedy, you find there are so many comics but you’re drawn to people with common interests and common goals,” he said. “We’re a great example of that.”
Keegan is also a Long Islander, from East Meadow.
“Mike Keegan is on the verge of blowing up,” Mylonas said. “These guys are performing nationally now so it’s a really exciting time.”
And the well-known Bobby Collins’ career spans decades.
“He’s been doing it for 40 years,” Mylonas said of the New Hyde Park native. “He came up with Letterman, Leno, Robert Klein and all those guys. He’s an inspiration. Every time I see him it’s new material. He’s constantly writing; he’s just amazing.”
“The nice thing about the show is, whether you’re 21 or 71, you’re going enjoy it,” Mylonas added. “It’s not a vulgar show. The funniest things in life are the things that are close to you, and that’s what we talk about. And your’e going to get a different perspective from each of us.”
