Artists are fanning out across the South Shore this week to paint en plein air.
That means they’re setting up their easels under the sun and clouds and capturing images of our coastal communities, from Smith Point Beach to the Fire Island Lighthouse.
Now if you see them around, you’ll know it’s all part of annual “Paint the Great South Bay,” which is running from Saturday, Aug. 20 to this Saturday, Aug. 27.
This event, the third annual, is being sponsored by Patchogue Arts Council, which will exhibit the pieces in the group’s gallery at 20 Terry Street for a “Wet Paint Sale” on Sunday, Aug. 28, from noon to 5 p.m.
“So if people want to purchase a painting, they have to come in because they’re only up that one day,” said Paint the Great South Bay founder and organizer Gina Lento.
In total, 23 artists have signed up, with room for more, Lento said. There are cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Anyone interested in participating Gina Lento directly at [email protected].
Lento said her favorite part about the event is when members of the public show up at the gallery.
“That’s exciting, when people see all their favorite local places in paintings,” she said.
