Update: This event has been postponed until a later date due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts, according to the Patchogue-Medford Hall of Fame Booster Club

Original story: Calling all veterans with ties to the Patchogue-Medford School District.

Whether you live, work or was raised in the district and moved away, the Patchogue-Medford Hall of Fame Booster Club is invited military veterans to the high school for a special Friday night ceremony before the varsity football team’s last home game against Central Islip on Oct. 28.

The booster club contacted greaterpatchogue.com for help spreading the word, because the organizers want to reach beyond just veterans affiliated with veterans’ organizations.

“It’s time to recognize them, and this is the closest date we could get to Veterans Day,” said Manny Felouzis, the booster club’s president. “

He also said football made the most sense, because it draws the biggest crowds.

The ceremony will last about an hour, and here’s what will happen:

Veterans should arrive to Patchogue-Medford High School at Navy (SEAL) Lt. Michael Murphy campus at 181 Buffalo Avenue in Medford at 5 p.m.

There will be a group photo in front of the high school between 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.

The JROTC Color Guard and Hall of Fame inductees will lead the vets onto the field, where they will line up along the sideline facing the home crowd for a public appreciation.

The veteran will then form a tunnel for the football team to run through, while carrying not only the American flag but flags representing each of the five branches of service.

A few veterans will then join the team captains for the 50-yard line coin toss.

“And then it will be game time,” Felouzis said. “With any kind of luck the team will be in contention for the playoffs, which would make it even more exciting and give the veterans some time to get to know some of the community members who might be there.”

Vets who would like to be involved should call Manny Felouzis: 631-275-7924.
