Brightwaters Ice Cream Social

Brightwaters Ice Cream SocialLocals packed up their picnic blankets and lawn chairs and headed to Wohseepee Park in Brightwaters Friday evening for the Annual Ice Cream Social featuring the Symphonic Band of Bay Shore-Brightwaters. (More photos below.)

The band, led by director Ted Scalzo, performed show tunes and patriotic favorites while members of the Brightwaters Department of Public Works and volunteers manned several ice cream tables set up around the park.

Guests were invited to help themselves to Coyle’s ice cream sandwiches, cookies, and lemonade.

As 18-month-old Ava Sanchez gleefully slurped up the remains of her vanilla and chocolate ice cream sandwich, her mother Maureen remarked on how much fun the family was having.

“We recently moved to the area,” she said. “This is our first big social event.”

Before the band played the Armed Forces Salute, Scalzo addressed the crowd and invited service members, past and present, to stand as they heard the theme song for their branch of the military.

“And let’s give them the biggest round of applause ever heard in Bay Shore–Brightwaters,” he said.

The Ice Cream Social is one of many summer social events offered by the Village of Brightwaters for its residents, all of which are graciously hosted by families and local businesses in the community.
