Southside Hospital in Bay Shore operates one of four epilepsy programs within the Northwell Health system that were recently reaccredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.

Northwell physicians made the announcement on Wednesday.

“We are honored that our epilepsy programs have received this prestigious NAEC recognition,” said Dr. Souhel Najjar, the senior vice president and executive director of  Northwell Health’s neurology services. “It is a testament to our health system’s dedicated, multidisciplinary team of specialized epilepsy doctors, nurses, monitoring technologists, pharmacists, and social workers.”

The Epilepsy Center at Southside Hospital, as well as the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, each received a Level 3 designation.

“Level 3 epilepsy centers deliver a range of medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial services needed to treat patients with refractory epilepsy,” reads the announcement. “In addition, Level 3 centers offer noninvasive evaluation for epilepsy surgery, straight-forward resective epilepsy surgery and implantation of the vagus nerve stimulator. These centers do not perform intracranial evaluations or other more complex epilepsy surgery.”

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park were each ecognized as Level 4 facilities.

“Level 4 epilepsy centers are equipped to provide the highest level of medical, psychological, neuropsychological and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with intractable epilepsy,” the announcement reads. “These centers offer intensive neurodiagnostic monitoring and a complete evaluation for epilepsy surgery, including intracranial electrodes and a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy, according to the NAEC guidelines.”
