Ferries GM: The 1 a.m. crowd was filled with ‘undesirables with no morals’

|

In a statement to the public explaining why the 1 a.m. ferries from Ocean Beach and Ocean Bay Park were called off, a Fire Island Ferries rep said the rowdy, early-morning crowd was “borderline unmanageable” and had posed safety issues to ferry staffers.

The post, by the Fire Island Ferries GM, explains that the 1 a.m. ferries only started in the early 1990s, and ran Saturdays-only.

At first, the crowd was manageable and without confrontations, reads the statement, posted to Facebook around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

“As time evolved, the clientele began changing, we needed to provide security on our ferries, on our docks, increase wages for the crews who ran these trips, and ask for additional support from the local police departments,” the statement reads. “The 1 a.m. ferry has now morphed into a 1 a.m. of undesirables with no morals and borderline unmanageable without instance.”

The Ocean Beach Village mayor could not be reached for comment.
