Bayport-Blue Point High School has been nominated by the state education department for one of the nation’s highest educational honors — the Blue Ribbon Award.
The U.S. Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has been recognizing top-performing schools in the country since 1982, according to the Blue Ribbon web page.
Two Long Island schools made the list in 2016: Harborfields and Syosset high schools.
Only 19 schools throughout the state were nominated for the 2017 honor.
Bayport-Blue Point High School was chosen based on its high graduation rate, as well as students’ performance in the area of English language arts and mathematics, district officials said.
“This is a proud moment for not only our school, but the district as a whole,” said the high school’s principal, Gaurav Passi, in a statement. “This nomination reinforces what we already know — Bayport-Blue Point High School is a highly successful school because of our dedicated, passionate teachers who care deeply about their students and their craft.”
“This honor is a testament to the efforts of so many, including our students and faculty,” added Superintendent, Vincent Butera “This nomination reaffirms our continued commitment to strengthening the many factors that impact student learning, while promoting strong connections within the school, as well as between the school and home.
“The nomination for the Blue Ribbon Award is a source of great pride for our school and community.”
