Each year in October, members of the Bay Shore High School girls varsity soccer dress themselves in pink for the annual Kicks for Cancer game to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness month.
This year was different.
This year, the girls added gold in their Oct. 6 game against Northport for childhood cancer. They highlighted their gold with gray, for brain cancer.
A beloved Bay Shore art teacher, Margaret Schultz, has had to take another year off to help care for her son, William.
“He is an amazing and wonderful 6-year-old boy who was diagnosed last summer with Medulloblastoma, a fast-growing, cancerous tumor in his brain,” said Krystyna Baumgartner, a district spokesperson. “After undergoing surgery, he endured 10 months of radiation and chemotherapy, which concluded in May of 2016.
“But in late July he was diagnosed with a recurrence, and the cancer has now spread to his spinal cord. He is currently hospitalized and again receiving intensive chemotherapy.”
The girls also wore William’s name on their sleeve “as a tribute to his bravery, big smile and personality,” she said.
The team has also raised $500 to help the Schultz family.
