Hours before he was fatally beaten in Shirley on Sunday, Christopher Martin posted a Facebook message referencing “gangsta” behavior — a remark that now carries added significance after three arrests and gang-related allegations in the case.
“Never would I think this exists!! Everyone gangsta behind crackheads n cops round here huh,” Martin wrote on Facebook on Sunday, several hours before Suffolk Police said he was brutally attacked with a sledgehammer and other items inside his Hounslow Road residence.
The post surfaced as cops announced the arrest of a third suspect in Martin’s death.
Benjamin Sheppard, 33, was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree gang assault, police said early Saturday. The Central Islip man was being held overnight at Suffolk Police’s Third Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned Saturday in Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip.
Martin, 48, died after a fight at the Shirley residence where he rented a room, according to police. A resident called 911 about 7:30 p.m. Sunday to report the altercation.
Martin was taken to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk, where he was pronounced dead.
The latest arrest follows charges filed against Korey Sammarco, 36, of Shirley and Melissa Fawcett, 50, of Central Islip, who were previously charged with first-degree gang assault.
Prosecutors said Martin was beaten with multiple objects, including a sledgehammer, baseball bat, dumbbells and a television, according to multiple reports. The authorities also alleged Sammarco admitted to striking Martin with some of the objects during the assault.
Prosecutors said in court that Sammarco told police he was a member of the Bloods street gang and implicated four other people in the beating.
Martin’s Facebook activity in the hours leading up to the attack appeared to reference ongoing tensions with others.
In a post made the night before his death, Martin wrote: “Love when ppl talk but can’t prove it lol I beg n the tough guys are never there haha Melissa Fawcett where’s all the tough guys again??”
In another post, Martin referenced a roommate whom he claimed was affiliated with the Bloods street gang.
Authorities have not publicly connected the Facebook posts to the investigation.
