Police believe there may be more victims
A home health aide hired to look after an 80-year-old East Setauket woman and her disabled daughter swiped nearly $10,000 worth of jewelry from their home over a month-long spree, police said.
Jackquilin Smith, 40, of Medford was arrested at her Matsunaye Drive home about 3 p.m., police said. Authorities charged her with third-degree grand larceny.
Smith was employed as a caregiver through Homewatch CareGivers, a Hicksville-based agency, and was assigned to provide care to the elderly woman and her 58-year-old daughter, who suffers from a degenerative neurological disorder.
Between late April and late May, police said, Smith stole jewelry valued at nearly $10,000 from the residence. Family members grew suspicious when pieces began disappearing and alerted police.
She was held overnight at Suffolk Police’s Fourth Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip.Detectives believe there may be additional victims. Anyone who thinks they may have been targeted by Smith is urged to contact the Sixth Squad at 631.854.8652.
