A 37-year-old Ronkonkoma man spent 45 minutes in the Long Island Sound without a life preserver until two Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers came to his rescue Tuesday.
According to police, a passing boat’s wake had flung Wen Zhong Wang from his 9-foot skiff around 11:45 a.m. in waters off Old Field Road in Setauket.
Police were called to the scene after a fisherman spotted Wang’s unoccupied boat and radioed for help.
Another 911 caller then reported a person yelling for help in the water.
Officers Cory Kim and Gregory Stroh responded aboard “Marine Delta” and located Wang about 1/10 of a mile from shore. Wang was transported to the Port Jefferson boat ramp where he was evaluated by Port Jefferson Ambulance personnel and released.
The fisherman towed the boat to shore where it was secured by the Port Jefferson Harbormaster, according to police.
