Physicians at the Imbert Cancer Center and Southside Hospital have just introduced a localized way for treating cancers in the abdomen called HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC).
It is the first time this treatment option has been offered by Northwell Health in Suffolk County, according to an announcement issued Tuesday.
“HIPEC is an innovative solution for patients and now available to Northwell Health patients in Suffolk County,” said Gary Deutsch, MD, surgical oncologist at the Imbert Cancer Center. “If you have an abdominal cancer, such as appendix, colon, ovarian or uterine cancer, HIPEC should be given serious consideration when determining the treatment plan with your oncologist.”
The method involves administering concentrated, heated chemotherapy directly to cancerous cells during surgery, according to Northwell.
During HIPEC, doctors inject a concentrated dose of chemotherapy into the affected area for 90 minutes. In addition to chemotherapy, exposing cancer cells to heat helps weaken them.
This method of chemotherapy has a higher absorption rate than using a port and sending chemotherapy through the blood stream, according to Benjamin Schwartz, MD, a gynecologic oncologist and director of the ob/gyn service line in Northwell Health’s Eastern Region.
In addition to chemotherapy, exposing cancer cells to heat helps weaken them.
