Overnight Sunrise Highway closures at Exit 40 to start Friday, will last ‘a few weeks’

Motorists should expect overnight lane closures along Sunrise Highway in the Towns of Babylon and Islip, Suffolk County for bridge maintenance.

Beginning on Friday, Sept. 22, there will be one or two lanes closed on Sunrise Highway’s mainline or service road at the bridge for State Route 231/Babylon-Northport Expressway — in the vicinity of exit 40 — between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday nights through Friday nights.

There will be no full closure of either the service road or mainline during this time.

This is part of a $5.2 million New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) project to perform minor steel repairs and paint overpass bridges at eight different locations all within Suffolk County.

Crews will begin working in the eastbound lanes and, upon full completion of that side, will move to the westbound lanes.

Work at this location is expected to last a few weeks.

Portable variable message signs have been placed in the area with information regarding the work. Motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, obey any speed restrictions that may be in place, and the instructions of the flag persons for their safety and the safety of the highway work crew.

As with most road and bridge projects, work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. For real-time travel information motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists and the local community while these bridge safety inspections are undertaken to help assure the continued protection of all motorists.
